Sailors Bill & Dale

In March of 1956 Bill Stein and I were having a beer at LangersÕ Bar and we decided to volunteer for the service. The next day I went to the draft at Ellsworth and had them place my name on the front of the list. All our friends had joined the service to get the G. I Bill. (I was in a 2-year program at River Falls and I wanted to complete the two-year program Ð and I did.) The next day I told Bill what I had done so he did the same thing. We then were called into the service of the Navy. We were sent to Chicago where we got separated because of my eyesight. We didn't see eachother again for about a year. Bill was sent to the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Randolph and I went to a different ship for about a year. I was then transferred to a carrier, the Franklin D. Roosevelt. Both ships (U.S.S. Randolph and my ship) were stationed in Florida at the same port. I went over to the Randolph and got Bill and we went for a beer Ð we only had about a four-hour pass.
When I was discharged from the Navy I went to the University of Madison where I finished my degree in Civil Engineering. I got married and moved to St. Paul, MN where I have lived ever since. I worked in St. Paul as a Civil Engineer and in recent years as a consultant and a building inspector.
I have two daughters: Lisa lives in northern California with her husband and daughter, Ashley (15). Nancy lives in Arden Hills, MN with her husband and two daughters Grace (13) and Maggie (12). I still live in St. Paul.

Tom Forthun

After high school I attended Los Angeles City College. I returned to Spring Valley in June of 1954 to go into business with Jim Price. We were the proprietors of the "Squeeze Inn" located across from the Forthun Motel. We were excited when Syver visited us for coffee and donuts. Jim and I were awaiting military service.

I entered the service in December of 1954 where I played in an Army band at Fort Ord, California. In September of 1956, I enrolled for a year at River Falls. I transferred to San Diego State in September of 1957 and graduated in June of 1959 with a teaching credential in music. I've been teaching music and many other subjects since 1959. This fall I'll start my 50th year teaching part time at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance.

Marlene and I recently celebrated our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary. We have five wonderful adult children and are expecting our first grandchild, Francesca Anne, in August. We live in Torrance, California at the present and have lived in the Los Angeles area since 1959. We just got back from a family reunion near Penn Yan, N. Y.

I have rehearsed and played trombone in several big bands in the L. A. area. We occasionally perform at the nearby Alpine Village. Marlene and I enjoy going to concerts and theater performances.

We look forward to talking with and seeing all of you at the class reunion.

Virginia (Woodmansee) Holerud

I have done a bit of traveling this year. I went to Orlando, Florida, to attend my granddaughter's wedding in February. My sister and I took an eight day vacation and had a wonderful time. In July we traveled to Lutsen, MN on the North Shore for a long weekend.

I work five hours a day four days a week at the BigDotofHappiness.com. It's an internet business that sells favors for baby and wedding showers. Look at it on the web.

Marval (Klecker) Peterson

Dear Classmates
Due to health problems, I will not be with you. Reunions
are fun to renew acquaintences. It is amazing how
mature we all appear. May you have a great event.

Classmate
Marval (Klecker) Peterson

------------------------------------------------------------

After graduation from Spring Valley High School Marval spent 1953Ñ1954 as an office secretary in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1954 she then attended Stout State College, majoring in Home Economics Education, graduating in 1958. She taught Home Economics at Viroqua High School in Viroqua, Wisconsin for 7 years. From 1965 to 1968 Marval served as the University of Wisconsin Home Economist in Green County (City of Monroe) Wisconsin.

Marval and Ed Peterson were united in marriage on June 10, 1967. She then returned to live in Viroqua where Ed was a licensed Electrical Contractor, operating his own business. Marval served as bookkeeper and retail sales person until 1976 when the business was terminated. At that time Ed went to work for the City of Viroqua, Fire and Police Department as a dispatcher until retirement in 2001. Ed and Marval have been very active volunteering in many community and Christian activities. They served in the Wisconsin Lay Witness program for 10 or more years, and worked with teenage youth groups locally.

Having no natural children, they opened their home from 1978 to 1997 as a foster rehabilitating home for young women that had mental and emotional problems, working with the mental health and local Department of Social Services. Most of the young women became productive members of the community and have been able to hold jobs.

In their later years Marval and Ed became volunteers for many activities both as individuals and as a couple. Marval was a board member of the Vernon County Agricultural Society becoming Superintendent of Home Economics Exhibits at the Vernon County Fair. She was a member of the Vernon County Mental Health Association and chairperson for many local fund drives. Marval was also Material Chairperson for the Door of Hope pregnancy crisis center.

From 2001 until present Marval has been the volunteer Director for the Living Faith Church TEFAP Food Pantry that serves needy families with groceries. This endeavor keeps her and Ed very busy. Over 100 families (250+ persons) are served by the food pantry monthly.

Some of the many awards that Marval has received have been, State Future Homemaker Degree, and honored with the Wisconsin Future Homemaker award. In September of 2007 Marval was awarded to be one of four Seniors of Distinction at the Vernon County Fair.

Shirley (Oebser) Aamodt

If You have read what my dear sister, Betty Falardeaux wrote accolades about me, she is much too nice.
After graduation, I lived with my aunt and uncle in St Paul and worked at Fairway Foods offices and also Glendenning Motorways.
Harold and I were married June 2nd 1956. In December of 1956, Uncle Sam said he needed Harold to serve our country, so we spent 18 months at Fort Hood Texas. We still stay in contact with our army friends. After Service, we lived at Stillwater, Mn., where Harold was a painter, decorator. Due to a leg injury, working on a ladder, his occupation had to change. He was approached by State Farm Insurance to become an agent when we moved to Chippewa Falls, Wi. in 1961. Our office was in our home for 8 years until we built a new office building in 1969. (wonderful day for me!)
On July 4th 1976, we moved into our new home on the Chippewa River where we still reside.
We have enjoyed some wonderful trips, among them, Alaska, Spain, Hawaii, Vancouver Island, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.
We are blessed to have three daughters. Sabrina and Tim Larson live at Rosemount, Mn. They have 2 sons, Nathan 18 and Matthew 15. Tammy Brown lives at rural Chippewa Falls and is the mom to Kye 14 and Ava 10. Her husband Kirk has an excavating business. Becky Kries and her husband Bill also live in rural Chippewa Falls and are the parents of Sara 15 and James 13.
I enjoy church work, especially making quilts for missions. I also belong to a group of quilting gals and have great times together.
I still love my flower gardens and being out doors.
Our grandchildren are our pride and joy. We have truly been blessed.

Roy Johnson

Roy is retired - he worked as a plasterer - an ornamental plasterer.

Joanne is still working at the drug store.

Jim Duberke

After high school graduation Jim Price and I attended Stout. After one year we still didn't know what we wanted to do with our life so we both joined the Air Force. After basic training and such I ended up in the Phillipines as a medic. After fulfilling my duties in the Air Force I came back to Spring Valley and attended college in Superior for one year. By then I knew I wanted to teach and coach - mainly coach! I also connected with my wife of 49 years while going to Superior. Diane Tanberg and I were married in August of 1959.
After our marriage I continued with my education in LaCrosse where our daughter, Kathy, was born. I then got my first coaching and teaching job in Somerset, Wisconsin. I stayed there for two years and moved to Prairie Farm, WI, and our son, Kraig, was born. I stayed in Prairie Farm for four years and moved to Ladysmith WI, where we are presently living and have been since 1968. In Somerset and Prairie Farm I coached just about everything and was athletic director. In Ladysmith I just coached football and only for a few years as it was giving me an ulcer and decided it wasn't worth the pain. I continued being athletic director for many years.
I was fortunate enough to be able to retire at age 55 with full benefits and I did. We spend our time in the summers at Lake Chippewa Campground where we have a park model home and are permanent seasonals there. I spend most of my days fishing and relaxing and going to the casino. We go south in January and February to Orange Beach, Alabama. We stay at the Phoenix VII in Orange Beach and have many friends there. Another couple from Ladysmith also go there so it is a good time. Our two children had been only within flying distance for many years but now are both living in Wisconsin so we get to their homes when we can for visits. Life is good.

Loretta Jean (Lynum) Jensen

After graduating from SVHS, I enrolled in the two year program at River Falls. Taught for four years in WI. Returned to RF in the fall of 1959 to complete my B.S. degree in June of 1960. Taught fourth grade for one year in White Bear, MN. My friend Marge and I decided to move on to Elgin, IL. We rented a house and our landlord worked for NICOR {No. Il. Gas Co.}. He was also Eric's co-worker. A blind date was arranged. We were married in July of 1962 at Woodside Church of rural Baldwin. After the birth of our two sons, Paul and Craig, I became a stay at home mom for 12 years.
Returned to the classroom in 1976 and retired in 1994. Completed 25 years of teaching. A buy out plan was offered to the senior teachers--that plan with an accumulation of numerous sick days gave me credit of 33 years for retirement. I taught grades K-6. My last 17 years in second grade. I have been a volunteer at a local hospital for ten years at the information desk.
Eric retired from NICOR in 1994 with 36 years of service. We are very active members of Zion Lutheran Church (Norwegian/Danish} where Eric is a life member. We were on the planning committee at Zion for our 125th church year in 2007.
I have traveled to all but one of the 50 states. Each summer during my single years I visited a different state. We also traveled to a planned destination with our sons during summer and spring break. The state of Maine and Novia Scotia beckons us next fall. We traveled throughtout Norway and finally met my cousins. Eric's cousins from Denmark have visited us and we accepted their invitation to visit Denmark. We rented a car and were our own tour guides for two weeks. We made side trips to England, Germany and Sweden.
Our sons Paul, Craig and his wife Bonnie live in the area.

Jim Price
Late summer1953, Jim Duberke and I enrolled at Stout University in Menomonie. I'm not sure either of us knew what we wanted from life, but we knew we should attend college and earn credits toward something.
After that first year, Jim and I enlisted in the Air Force. After basic training, I was assigned to Eglin AFB, FL and Jim remained in San Antonio where he received training as a medic. It never occurred to me that we would be assigned different bases Ð so much for looking ahead. Our friendship has endured.
The following year I transferred to Tachikawa Air Base in Japan where I remained for four years. The tour was originally two years, but I married my first wife, Sue, and the tour was extended.
Our first child, Karolyn Kei was born in Japan, and when she was just three months old my tour ended and we were assigned to Larson AFB in Moses Lake, WA. Where in the world is Moses Lake? Well, did you know Washington has terrain that resembles a desert? Nevertheless, we enjoyed our short tour there and the Wing transferred to McChord AFB in Tacoma, WA. Much nicer.
There, my year at Stout paid off in that I was selected to attend the Engineering School at the University of Wyoming. I received my degree in 1963 and attended Officer Training School in San Antonio, TX. Two days prior to my commissioning, we became parents of our son, Thomas George. Unfortunately, Tommy passed away ten months later while we were stationed at Lowry AFB, CO.
At Lowry, I was trained as an Avionics Officer; Aviation Electronics that is. Someone discovered I had an engineering degree and chose to ÒvolunteerÓ me as an instructor in the course. Not a good choice, in my mind, because Vietnam was the typical assignment for military types at that time, and I would have no field experience. I opted to ask the Air Force to assign me to a university where I could work towards my master's degree and they agreed. I attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where I received my Master of Science degree in Research and Development Systems Management. Our daughter, Dawn Marie, was born in Aurora, CO and our son, Jim, was born in Los Angeles. Who would I see in Los Angeles but Tom Forthun. In fact, I believe Tom and Marlene were at our house the day he proposed to Marlene. I hope that's correct, Tom and Marlene.
Some months later, with degree in hand, I was assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. There, I cut my procurement teeth on an aircraft subsystem and was then named Program Manager for procurement of C-130 aircraft. Not the most exciting program because the aircraft development had been completed and procurement was ongoing. However, it was interesting in that we procured aircraft for the Air Force, of course, but also foreign countries, including Canada (my they like their rye whiskey), and ski equipped aircraft for the National Science Foundation for use in Antarctica. I was invited to travel to Antarctica as a guest, but circumstances prevented my accepting the invitation. How unfortunate.
I retired from the Air Force in 1974 and accepted a position with Systems Development Corporation. Where would I work? Wright-Patterson AFB, of course. Three years later I signed on with Program Control Corporation as a consultant in computer science. Guess who I met in the hallway of the A-10 procurement building Ð Duane Olson. Unfortunately his stay was brief and we didn't get to talk much; but it was a pleasant surprise.
Still later, I was invited to join Civil Service at Wright-Patterson. There, because of my ongoing post graduate education in computer science at Wright State University, I acted in the capacity of procurement consultant related to airborne computer systems. Some years later, I was reassigned as a supervisor in the F-15 procurement program office, and there I stayed until my retirement in 1996. No, I'm not a double dipper; I combined all my time with the Air Force and retired as a civil servant, with some privileges as a military type.
Sometime between my military career and my years as a contractor for the Air Force, Sue and I separated. Then I found Marjie. A happy life, not without issues, but wonderful. We were together for nearly thirty years when I lost her to the dreaded cancer December 2006. She was at our fiftieth reunion, as you might recall, and she enjoyed it so. I truly miss her, but I am gradually learning to reorganize my life without her. Someone told me I must surrender the flesh, it was no longer there; that I could hang on to the memories, but I must open myself to whatever the future might bring.
Marjie and I contributed wherever we could in time to our children, grandchildren and church, and I continue to do so. Our five children and their spouses have blessed us with twelve wonderful grandchildren, and we were, and I remain so proud of them all.

Shirley (Olson) Olson
After graduation I worked in the cities for the summer. Then off to college at River Falls. I chose to graduate in the three year elementary program in May of l956. That June, I married Ken Olson who was attending R.F. He transferred to the U. of Minnesota to finish his last two years. I taught 1st grade for those two years. Our daughter Kristi was born the next December and Ken had his degree.
We lived in Marion, Indiana, Eau Claire, WI (where our daughter Karen was born) then to Horicon, WI and finally to Roselle, IL (a suburb of Chicago) where we lived until we retired. Ken worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and I finished my degree at Elmhurst College and taught 1st and 2nd Grade for 24 years right in Roselle.
Kristi, our oldest daughter, married her high school sweetheart, Pat Shannon. They both graduated from Winona State College. Kristi has her degree in nursing and works in surgery at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis. They have two daughters, Jenna and Kayla who are both in college at the present time. Karen graduated from N.D.S.U. in Fargo N.D. in pharmacy. She now works for the MN Board of Pharmacy. They were both such an asset to me when Ken was ill. He passed away 7 years ago. Life has never been the same without him.
Our summers were always filled with lots of biking with friends. Even biked those hills in Vermont. They were a good work-out. We did a lot of camping in a small pop-up camper with our kids and friends. Winter was cross country and downhill skiing. Our two grand-daughters were on top of the hill with a rope around their waist at age 3. Even at that age they loved it. When our youngest grand-daughter was old enough our whole family (except Ken) became our instructors first Òthree generational classÓ and we became certified in scuba diving and did many wonderful dives in the Cayman Islands. What a wonderful world down there. My heart surgery prevents me from joining them now but I do snorkel over them and resent the fact that IÕm not down with them seeing those marvelous sights.
Both Ken and I also enjoyed traveling. Trips to Europe, Sweden (meeting relatives) Norway, Hawaii, Alaska and Canada. Karen and I also attended Trygve and Erica's wedding in Lithuania and did some sightseeing in Latvia, Estonia and Finland with Mary, Craig and Kjersti. I attended elderhostels with my grand-daughters. Jenna and I went to Bermuda snorkeling. Kayla and I headed to Niue (an island in the South Pacific) and had a wonderful time snorkeling right in with the humpback whales and spinner dolphins. It was an awesome experience being that close to those magnificent creatures. Bev Schultz (college roommate) and I have gone to Florida for six weeks or so in the winter. We enjoy the sunshine and getting out of the cold winter weather. She has also lost her husband Harland. .
After retirement we built a wonderful home at Long Lake between Rice Lake and Eau Claire where we all enjoyed many good times. I finally sold it and now have built a town house in Lino Lakes, MN near my girls. I do so miss my husband Ken. Life has never been the same without him. But my children, grandchildren and friends keep me busy along with many activities.

Dear Classmates,

Another five years gone by and am thankful for each year we are here to enjoy it.

I never dreamed we would be now residing in Alabama. Our daughter Julie and Dale, our son Dean and Loida were transferred here from Texas and decided we needed to be closer to them, so here we are.  The summers in Arizona are very hot, so as we hear "its the same here." Well we will try it anyway and get away a few months out of the year.

My husband Ed did the General on our new home, it is now complete, we have our furniture and all from Arizona, so here we are! We will celebrate our 55th Wedding Anniversary July 18th, wowwww!!

Ed and I have four children, nine grandchildren, and five great grandkiddies. Our daughter Linnea and family live in North Carolina, about seven hours away. Our son Charles and family live in Hawaii. So we have plans for visits to both this summer.

Hopefully, we will make it to the REUNION, if all goes as planned. Looking forward to seeing all of you August 2, 08.

   GOD BLESS!

Colleen (Ingli) Roe

I have been married to Dean Roe for over 53 years. We have made our home in Kewaskum, Wisconsin (40 miles north of Milwaukee) for the past 47 years. We have one daughter, Trish, who teaches middle school students with special needs at a Charter School in southwest Minnesota.

Richard (Dick) Harrison Lowater
My reason for using my full name, it reminds me of kindergarten when we had to tell our name and address, so, Richard Harrison Lowater, Spring Valley, WI telephone number 9.
When I left SV in the summer of 1951, the Scout troop had been in Colorado on a field trip. I came home to an empty home and left for Chippewa Falls and my last two years of high school. I had the opportunity to be taught by Mr. Howard Elliott who started his band career in SV. I was privileged to be the Band president my senior year.
After graduation I attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for two years and one year at Dunwoody Institute in the twin cities. My fathersÕ bookkeeper passed away and I came back to Chippewa Falls to take over the office work. In 1960 I purchased the fuel business from my father, leaving the auto parts business as a separate business. It wasnÕt long and my father retired and I sold 1Ú2 of the fuel business, built a new building and dug into the business world. I built the business to where we had five outlets for auto parts and I became a chairman of the board of a major parts supplier.
During the years I married my first wife and had three children and adopted my wifeÕs youngest sister. In 1975 Myrt and I were married. She has five children, so at this time we have forty grandchildren and at last count thirty four great-grandchildren.
I became active in Lions International, Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, ShinersÕ, United fund and Treasure of our local church.
I retired after having a heart attack in1992, moved to Winter, WI and went logging. Built two log homes, one with help and a smaller home we live in now. In 2000 we sold our big home and moved into a motor home. Changed our address to Sioux Falls, SD and live in Florence, AZ in the winter and Winter, WI the summer.
Church is a big part of my wife Myrt and I. We belong to Calvary Lutheran Church in Loretta, WI of which I was President and Treasure of the congregation.

I have been mararied to Shirley for fifty-four years. We have lived in the same house for forty-five years. We have four children all living close and doing very well. We have seven grandchildren.

I have many interests, the main one being antique cars. Life has been good.

I retired from a construction company after 38 years where I was treated well and paid well.

Mary Louise (Olson) Olson

Last summer, along with several classmates, I attended the 50th class reunion of my college class at UWRF. Where did the years go? I suppose we all ask that question. In August 1957, Craig and I moved to Prince George, VA. I taught English classes (juniors and seniors) at PGHS for two years during Craig's active duty at Ft. Lee. The following year I taught at Elmwood High School. A job as district librarian at Rosemount, MN filled the next two years. A 3M transfer to Decatur, Alabama, gave me the opportunity to sub for one year and then work at DHS as assistant librarian for four years. We returned to Wisconsin where I attended graduate classes at UWRF. Our son Trygve was born in 1967 and our daughter Kjersti was born in 1973. I returned to the classroom (RFHS) as a sub and then half time in 1978. With expanding enrollment my job became fulltime. I retired in June 1995, after teaching regular and college prep English classes for juniors and seniors.

Our retirement years have been busy with travel. We enjoy Elder Hostels (19 for me and 20 for Craig.) Our favorite was Iceland. Camping and cruising have been a large part of our travel experience, as well. Since our son lived in Lithuania for 7 years , it has been our destination four times. Our stays usually included venturing forth to neighboring countries. Craig and I celebrated my 70th birthday in Tahiti with Trygve and his wife. Our 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated last spring in Norway with Kjersti and her husband.

I continue my life long interest in politics. From 1996 to 2004 I served as a supervisor on the St. Croix County Board. Music is still important to me and I play the piano nearly every day. Reading, plants, baking, walking, and our 4th Springer spaniel occupy many hours a day. Fortunately, our health has been good , opportunities abundant, and our varied interests continue.

2 years college at River Falls

2 years at Univ. Wisconsin, Madison, graduated BS Chem (1957 Summer)

First job as chemist at G.D. Searle in Chicago, IL when they were working on THE PILL.

Graduate School in Iowa City, University of Iowa, Ph.D. in organic chemistry 1964.

Employed by General Electric in Schenectady, New York, 1963-1966.

Post doctoral research at the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy 1966-1967.

Met and married Sarah Hall (MS in Nursing from Univ. of Tennessee, Memphis) of Corryton, Tennessee, 1967.

25 years with the U.S Dept. of Agriculture with various labs in Starkville, Mississippi, (our children, Cheryl and Neil, were born in Starkville) Tifton, Georgia and Athens, Georgia. The USDA lab in Starkville, MS was charged with attacking the cotton boll weevil problem. My job was to synthesize the 4 compounds (sex attractant) elaborated by the male boll weevil to attract female boll weevils for their purpose of ensuring the continuance of the species. The attractant is currently being used in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Mexico (the origin of the boll weevil problem in the US).

While we were living in Tifton, GA, Sarah went back to School at the University of Alabama, in Birmingham, AL to get a Doctorate in Nursing. After getting her doctorate, she has taught at Medical College of Georgia, Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston ,SC, Penn State University (yes, the one with the good football team) as Nursing School Director. Now she is a professor of nursing at Binghamton, NY (SUNY) and also is a visiting professor of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

From late January until the end of April 2008 Sarah taught nursing to Masters Degree students at the University of Botswana in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana. I went with her to help her get settled and to go on safari. Our son joined us and we went on safari in the Okavango Delta (the worldÕs only inland delta). We saw elephants, giraffes, zebras, kudu (antelope type with spiral antlers), monkeys, baboons, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, large storks guarding their nest, fish eagles, and many other birds. At one game reserve we got to pet a tame cheetah that were raised by humans after their mother died shortly after their birth.

Both of our children are engineers. Cheryl is a laser engineer and has two lasers aboard a satellite, used as reference wavelengths to detect pollutants in the atmosphere. The satellite is called the Earth Observing Satellite (EOS). (You can look it up on the web.)

Our son is an electrical engineer, lives in Charlotte, NC, and works in nearby South Carolina for a company that was recently taken over by Honeywell. The company makes handheld electronic devices for taking inventory remotely by pointing a strong light at a distant barcode on a box. The inventory is automatically put into the main warehouse computer. Fed Ex is one of their main customers. In fact if you go to a Home Depot store you may see a credit card reader that says Handheld Products on it.

I have lived in 9 states, Delaware only sporadically, when working on my last employment with Johnson & Johnson as an analytical chemist.

Sarah and I have been to 10 foreign countries (excluding Canada), Mexico (just barely),Holland, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Russia (Saint Petersburg), Indonesia, and Australia.

Upon graduation from high school I studied to be an x-ray technician at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis and worked after graduation for Orthopedic Doctors. Len and I were married in 1955 while he was in the Air Force. His tour of duty took him to Africa for 15 months. When he returned we moved to Grand Rapids, MN where he completed his tour of duty in the Air Force. He then attended Itasca Junior College for two years. We moved to Menomonee, WI, where Len completed his degree in Vocational Electronics at Stout. I worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire until our first daughter, Patti Jo was born. Two weeks later we moved to Oshkosh, WI where Len was hired to teach Electronics at Oshkosh Technical Institute, later changed to Appleton Technical College. Kristi Lynn was born three years later. I was a stay at home Mom until Patti went to college - then I worked at an Internal Medicine Group for 16 years.
When the girls were through college and we were both retired we traveled. Two trips to Norway to visit LenÕs relatives (they have come here to see us also), a trip to Australia to see our AFS student and other places.
Patti married Terry Porto, lives in Stow, OH (near Cleveland). They have two boys Adam 14 and Josh 12. Both are enjoying baseball and basketball. Kristi married Eric Clark and they live in Oshkosh (just 6 blocks away). They have three boys - Andrew (Drew) 15, Will 11, and Evan 7. Drew plays hockey and has a lawn mowing business, Will enjoys basketball and baseball, Evan is trying them all.
We have both had heart surgeries, Len 5 bypasses in Ò03 and I had a heart valve replaced with some other things in Ò07. Thank God we both are feeling well and looking forward to seeing everyone.

After an academic quarter at UW-River Falls in Ô53, I volunteered for the draft (along with John Kirk), and we went to Fort Riley, KS for basic army training. I went on to cook school at Fort Benning, GA, and then was stationed for a year on Eniwetok Atoll, which was part of the Atomic Proving Grounds in the Pacific. Just before being discharged I was assigned to a training facility at Camp Haven, WI (that is now the Whistling Straits Golf Course). Camp Haven was near to Sheboygan, where I met and later married my wife, Carol. After being discharged from the Army in Ô56, I first went to work at the Great Northern Railway Office in St. Paul, and then moved to Milwaukee where I got a job at Evinrude Outboard Motors.

In 1957, I made another start at college, this time enrolling at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and completed the undergraduate program in 1961. Then it was off to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After finishing a doctorate degree in 1968 we moved to Bloomington, IN, where I joined the Anthropology Department at Indiana University. I retired from teaching here at IU in 2000, but go into the lab a couple times a week to do a little research. My research is in human biology and genetics, in which I studied Polynesians on Easter Island in the South Pacific and then for many years went to the North Slope of Alaska to work among Inupiat (Eskimo) villagers. I also did some research with identical twins at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Carol and I like to travel, and have visited Croatia, Italy and Austria, and many points across the States. One summer I taught human biology in Saudi Arabia. A couple of years ago we went to Anchorage, AK for some meetings, and were able to see the start of the Iditarod dog sled race, which was really exciting. I try to keep up an active life. After doing marathons for a number of years, I am now down to running 5K and 10K races, and a lot of walking.

We have two children and four grandchildren. Our daughter, Heidi and her husband Kirk, and grandchildren Nicole and Paul, live south of us in Huntingburg, IN. Heidi is a substitute teacher and paints murals for homes and businesses. Our son Scott, and his wife Denise have a son, Jim, and they live in Brighton, MI. And recently they were successful in adopting a baby girl, Isabella, from Guatemala. Scott is an exhibit designer at the Kelsey Museum, University of Michigan.

So, in sports we pretty well have the Big-Ten covered in that at times we cheer on the Wisconsin Badgers, the Michigan Wolverines, and also our IU Hoosiers. It was pretty nice that the Indy Colts won the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, but we still retain a strong allegiance to the Green Bay Packers.

My wife Barbara and I moved to Menomonie seven years ago. After graduating from UW Eau Claire, I taught speech and English at Rice Lake High School. Barb and I got married in 1957 and we lived in Rice Lake for seven years. In 1964 I was offered a job teaching at Arrowhead High School in Hartland, WI. After I completed my Master's Degree in 1969, I became high school principal in Phillips, WI. Four years later, I became superintendent and served in that capacity until I retired in 1992. Barb, who is a registered nurse, also retired at the same time.
Since then we have divided our time between Wisconsin and Arizona. We have a place in Mesa, and I am devoted to the citrus trees we have in our back yard: oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, and grapefruit.
We have four children, Lisa, Pamela, David, and Steven. Two of the children are adopted, but we can't remember which two. We have 10 grandchildren. All of them make our lives richer. We were especially blessed when our son Steve and family moved to Menomonie from Texas last summer. The youngest grandchildren are now right here in town, they are 9,5, and 3. How great it is!!

After graduation Jim Danielson and I joined the Marine Corp. We volunteered on my 18th birthday, and left by train from St. Paul for ÒBoot CampÓ at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot in San Diego, California two weeks later. We had gone to Minneapolis to join the Navy, and when we found out we would have to wait until the following November before we would go, we decided to go back home. On our way out of the Federal building we were enticed into the Marine Recruiting office. By the time we left we had signed up. Our choice was to go in for three years, and leave right away or wait until September and go in for two years. We left for San Diego on July 6, 1953. I recognized our mistake when in September 1955, when my friends were getting out, and I still had 10 months to serve.

I graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1960. Karen (Class of '56) and I were married in 1958. After graduation we went to Chicago, IL where I worked as a Public Accountant. Our son Chris was born in 1961 while we lived there. After three years I took a position with Archer Daniels Midland in Minneapolis. Our daughter Lisa was born in 1963. Four years later I joined Honeywell for a 32-year career. After retiring from Honeywell I was controller for a computer consulting company. IÕm still working part time, performing accounting services for several clients. In our nearly 50 years of marriage weÕve lived in many different places including Chicago, Springfield, IL, Boston and Scotland.

Our son Chris is a Registered Nurse, and a Navy Lieutenant currently serving at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. He had been activated twice for one-year deployments to the same hospital where he works in the Intensive Care Unit and has just extended for an additional year starting in August of 2008. ChrisÕ wife, son, and two daughters will join him in May and be with him until he is deactivated and returns to his ICU duties at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, MN.

Our daughter Lisa is in her last semester of school in Blaine, MN where she is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. She is the mother of three sons and one daughter. Lisa lives in Forest Lake, MN.

Karen and I make our home in Forest Lake, MN and spend much of our summer at our lake cabin in Wisconsin. I still am an avid golfer and spend several days a week on the golf course.

Barbara (Johnson) Peterson - written by her daughter, Starlie Espinoza
My mom married John Howard Peterson (Class of '50) in May of 1954. I was born the following year. We moved to Rockford, Illinois in 1963 (arrived the day J.F.K. was shot in Dallas). Relocated to Minneapolis in 1969. Moved to Simi Valley, California in 1982.
Mom took care of my father (in good times and bad - until death did they part) until he passed away in 1992. In 1994, her parents, Kermit and Marie Johnson, came to live with us in Simi Valley. Mom was such a good daughter, taking them to service and tending to their needs until they both passed away in 1999.
Mom has always been a great caregiver to my four children (now ages 21-33), as well as our animals, our gardening, and our household chores. She still bakes, crochets, knits and sews.
Mom continues to see the good in everyone and everything. She is a practicing Jehovah's Witness and makes sure her "old" friends have rides to the Kingdom Hall and out on service.
Dave Stein
Retired from John Deere in 1985, retired from PreMark International in 1995 and retired from Brunswick in 2000. I remarried in 1991. Had my second open heart surgery in 2006 and doing fine. I remain retired, enjoy fishing when the weather permits and golf twice a week, again, weather permitting. We have been spending 5 to 6 weeks in south Texas each winter for years. Joan is also retired. She has been on dialysis for several months and doing fine with that but hoping for a transplant kidney. I will probably have a new knee by the time we get together in August. Looking forward to the reunion and hope to see you all then.

Time marches on in all our lives, and family has always been first. Our sons and families: Steve, Jami and family live in New York at the prsent time; Tony and Dave, Nicole and his family live in Inver Grove Heights, also. Ian, our oldest grandson will graduate from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul in May. He grew up in Texas so great for us to be close for him.

Our travels take us to Europe. We love it and have many friends there.

The Boy Scouts are still very much in our lives as Dan is still active, along with hosting several foreign exchange students, and Boy Scouts has kept us busy, and our grandchildren keep us on our toes.

John Kirk

Barb (Brandt) Kirk

John and Barbara have lived in Barron, WI since 1960. We moved here as John was hired to teach instrumental music in the Barron Area School system. Barb worked as a Lab Technician at the Barron Medical Center and later as a Lab Tech for Jerome's Foods (The Turkey Store), also in Barron.

We have two daughters: Prudence Shay, who lives in Chippewa Falls and is a Staffing Specialist for Manpower; and Pamela Jacoby, who lives in Barron and is Fine Jewelry Associate for JC Penney's. We also have two grandchildren (Prudy's children), Stephanie (Jason) Hotujec and Kyle Lee. Stephanie is a special needs teacher in the Durand School District. Her husband Jason is a Computer Engineer for a company in Eau Claire. Kyle is in his senior year at UW Stout and is also going into the computer field. We have a little dog, Max, who was a rescued adoptee. He had a pretty rough start  but is very spoiled now.

Both of us are retired and enjoy our backyard, which has a creek running through it. It is a haven for wildlife in spite of being in the city limits.

We are both busy with our hobbies as well as various church activities. John still plays the trumpet regularly and plays in a small band which travels to area nursing homes sharing some of the old time favorites. He, also, plays in church. Barb is always busy with church activities which include: Jail Ministry, church library, Circle and altar guild.

We think of our classmates often and always look forward to seeing and hearing from you.

We have six children, three girls and three boys, twenty one grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

My wife retired from the UWRF in 1991 after twenty-one years of service there to help our youngest daughter take care of her new twin girls who were born prematurely. They are now two beautiful seventeen year old juniors at SV High School doing great!

I retired in January of 1996 after thirty-one years with the State of Minnesota driving bus for the MTC in the Twin Cities. I won the State Bus Rodeo in 1978 and was given an all expense paid trip with my wife to Toronto for the National Bus Rodeo for one week.

We also made a trip to Germany that year to visit our son and family who was stationed there in the Army at that time.

We took two new motorhomes to Alaska during the time our son and family were there for a firm that we had rented from while in Alaska earlier. We made eight trips to Alaska while our son and family were there. They had a large boat so we did a lot of fishing for salmon and halibut. One trip we returned on a Princess Cruise from Seward to Vancouver.

In 2006 we made a trip to Norway with my siblings to visit some cousins and spent a great week with them and then a week with a tour group.

I had open heart surgery in 2002 and we sold our home in Spring Valley after forty-seven years there, and purchased a new Twin Home in Baldwin.

We stay very busy with family gatherings, bible study with inmates at the St. Croix County Jail in Hudson, Men's Ministry at our church and a weekly men's bible study at our home on Thursday mornings. (Edith bakes muffins for us men on Thursday mornings, mmmm--good!) Also, we do the Calendar/Newsletter each month for our church. We also do marriage counseling when needed and pastoral care ministry.

We try to attend the Class Breakfast at Denny's in Hudson on the first Tuesday of each month. There are usually classmates there from classes of 51, 52 & 53 and some times other classes also.
