Russell Morgan Spence, Age 86 Russell Morgan Spence was born in Amboy, MN on January 24, 1937, to Vernon George & Eunice Marian Spence (Fisk). They moved to Spring Valley, WI where he farmed as a boy, while attending a one-room grade school. Russ often bragged about how he skipped the 3rd grade, but usually fessed-up that it was only because there were just 2 students in that grade. Russ graduated from SVHS with the Class of '54. He convinced his parents to let him enlist early in the army at 17, becoming a paratrooper in the 11th and 101st Airborne Divisions, stationed in Munich. He returned to Spring Valley, where in 1959 he eloped to Iowa with his high school crush, Mary Josephine Richardson, after persuading her to break off an engagement. They moved to River Falls, WI, where he graduated from college. They then moved to St. Paul, MN, where they started their family while Russ worked days and went to evening law school at William Mitchell College of Law. He then joined a Minneapolis law firm as an investigator, working his way up to becoming a named partner at Meshbesher & Spence, Ltd. There, Russ started and built a successful PI practice, mentoring many fine trial attorneys, connecting with juries and winning record recoveries for his clients. After Mary Jo passed away in 1994, Russ reevaluated life’s priorities. He later married Laurel Anne McGraw, continuing to build his blended family, enjoying travels to 31 different countries, family gatherings and the fruits of his labors for the next 27 years. Russ enjoyed time farming at his Spring Valley "hobby" farm, where he helped and worked with many family and friends, old and new. Although he wore 3-piece suits in court, he never forgot how to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty doing an honest, long-day’s work. He was an avid golfer and long-time hunter, which even took him to Wyoming and Colorado for horseback ride-in excursions with cherished friends. He enjoyed time in Scottsdale, the Twin Cities, at Balsam Lake and of course, his farm. Russ will long be remembered as an engaging, caring, generous and authentic man, who was a great storyteller. He successfully challenged himself, and those around him, overcoming many obstacles along the way. Paraphrasing Frank Sinatra, "he did it [his] way!" Russ was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Mary Jo, brothers Vernon and Wayne Spence, sister Evelyn Vanasse, sister-in-law Anita Spence, brothers-in-law David and Don Richardson, David Reese, and granddaughter, Monica Josephine Spence. Robert Jacobson, Age 88 He served as a LTJG Pilot in the United States Navy 1955-1959. He learned how to fly planes in Pensacola, Florida and Hutchinson, Kansas. He was stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington where he flew P-2V patrol bombers and sub chasers. In the last years of his service, he spent time on Kodiak Island, “November-May, when Everyone wants to go to Alaska.” He was in Hawaii for the last USA atomic bomb test. He said, “If anyone can enjoy the service, I did! Many good friends, many good times, AND no wars…That’s how good we were.” Bob attended Wisconsin State College at River Falls 1953-1955 and resumed his pursuit of higher education at the completion of his time in the Navy. He graduated in 1961 with degrees in Ag Education and Biology. 1961 was a very good year! Bob married Lorraine “Lori” Jacobson of Spring Valley, Wisconsin (Class of '56). Though they are not related, sharing the same last name did help facilitate an introduction. It was a year of firsts: first child (Debra,) first house, and first job. Bob’s career in finance began with a job at Production Credit Association (PCA) in Shawano, Wisconsin and continued with a position of Branch Manager in Antigo, Wisconsin. There, the family grew to include son, Michael. It was a job with the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank, making loans to farmers, that brought the family to Hudson, Wisconsin in 1967, where they were joined by son, Brian. This job eventually meant a move to Lansing, Michigan for 1.5 years. Bob must have felt a little guilty because before too long, the family had a camper and a puppy! When Bob’s family returned to Hudson in 1972, Bob was able to purchase a 6 acre hobby farm that he dearly loved. “Can’t take the country out of a farm boy,” he said. Many animals came and went through the years, and there was plenty of space for gardens! He never wanted to leave it, and as it turns out, he didn’t have to. Bob worked at American National Bank, St. Paul, from 1974 to 1997, when he retired at the age of 62. His position of Vice President of Correspondent Banking allowed him and Lori a chance to travel to many great locations in the U.S. and Canada, attending conventions and seminars. “Best part – all on expense account.” Bob enjoyed spending time with Lori, his wife of 62 years, his 3 children and their families (11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.) He and Lori were in a Couples Bridge Club for 50 years! He was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church for 55 years! He was an avid reader. Traveling was something he enjoyed; this included trips to many European countries and cruises with dear friends, and summer cabin trips with the family. He loved to be outside, gardening, fishing, hunting, or just sitting on the front porch watching the hummingbirds. He is survived by his wife Lori, a daughter Debra (Jack) Marshall, son Michael (Heidi) Jacobson, son Brian Jacobson, grandchildren Jennie (Andy) Johnson, Maggie Marshall, Jake (Caroline) Marshall, Austin (Jenna) Jacobson, Jake (Dominique) Weber, Chris, Sam, Ben, Nick, and Lizzie Jacobson, great-grandchildren Reid Marshall and Levi Weber, sisters Alice Kleist and Helen Banzhof, brother Bill (Valerie) Jacobson, sister-in-law Barb Jacobson, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by parents Harold and Grace Jacobson, parents-in-law Art and Lenora Jacobson, grandson Logan Jacobson, brothers Vernon and Gary Jacobson, sister Margie Enerson, brothers-in-law Ken Enerson, Marv Banzhof, and Gene Kleist, sister-in law Ruth Jacobson, niece Rhonda Junge, and nephew Dan Enerson. A visitation will be held from 9-11:00 a.m. on Saturday December 30, 2023 at Bethel Lutheran Church – Downtown, 920 Third Street, Hudson, WI 54016. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with military honors and a lunch to follow. A burial will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice. |

Lucille Gedatus, Age 90 Lucille’s life began on July 14, 1933. She was born to Herman and Jennie (Formoe) Holerud in her family home in the Township of Cady on Cty Rd NN after the Highland Ridge Campground road. Lucille married Virgil Gedatus on July 18, 1953 on a beautiful summer day in the backyard of her parents’ home. In 1970 Virgil and Lucille bought the family farm. 90 years later, just 5 miles from where she was born, her family celebrated her 90th birthday on the farm that her and Virgil raised their 9 children. They were blessed with 11 grandchildren - Jason, Jeremy, Jessica, Jordan, Jake, Christine, Daniel, Alyssa, Nicole, Tyler and Jack and 12 great grandchildren – Taylor, Eric, Mason, Kaitlyn, Lucas, Layne, Isaac, Haley, Easton, Riley, Addison, and Owen who they both adored and loved spending time with. They celebrated all of their birthdays and big events together. After raising her children at the age of 60 Lucille started working at Kids View Learning Center (out of a need from her daughter Diane). At the beginning she was a float working in the classroom when she was needed. When the cook retired Lucille decide she would like to become the cook. She loved her Kids View family. Lucille worked at Kids View for 20 years, until she retired in 2013 at the age of 80. Lucille enjoys doing her needlework like embroidery and crewel (embroidery with yarn). Many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren have received a framed embroidery birth announcement made by Lucille. She loves baking, making Norwegian rosettes, watching the birds, and tending to her beautiful flowers. Her true love was playing cards with her family and friends. She kept herself busy with her Homemakers club, the Honey Doers. She was a member of the Honey Doers since 1983. She was a member of the St. Croix Area Volunteer League. She brought smiles to the children’s faces by running the coloring table at their events. She also attended a monthly bible study group with friends. Virgil and Lucille became members of Zion Lutheran Church in 1967. She enjoyed Sunday service on the live stream. Over the years Virgil and Lucille loved going fishing and staying in their camper in Clam Falls, WI. This tradition of fishing has moved down the line to some of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In March of 2020 the Gedatus family heard the words esophageal cancer after Lucille had an endoscopy. Her will to fight and beat cancer at the age of 86 was unbelievable. Because of COVID, she underwent radiation in New Richmond by herself. She was blessed to do chemo at Western WI Health where they allowed one person to be with her. Each week we would see Dr. Hurley. He would walk into the room, take one look at her and shake his head. He would say “how are you doing” and she would say “I’m just fine” and he would say “you are one strong woman” and shake his head again. After 6 of the 8 weeks of radiation and chemo, the symptoms hit her. But she never complained. The family was very blessed to have such a strong Mom. Lucille is survived by her children Steve (Honorine), Dave (Diane M), Mike (Kim), Dick, Brian (Sheila), Luann (John) Lavelle, Diane (Joel Ihrke), and the twins Pat and Pam. She was blessed to have all 9 of her children live within a 10 mile radius of the home farm. Mary Louise Olson Olson, Age 87 She met her future husband, Craig Olson of Baldwin, at a Luther League event. They loved attending dances in the area, including at the Prom Ballroom in Saint Paul. They were married at Gilman Lutheran Church on June 30, 1956 and would refer to theirs as a “mixed marriage” because he was Swedish and she Norwegian. Mary Louise attended UW-River Falls, where she made more cherished lifelong friendships. During her college years, she sang with a trio called the “Y-Tones” and was voted Campus Cover Girl. She graduated from UWRF in 1957 with a degree in Education and Library Science. Throughout her career, she worked in Petersburg and Prince George, VA; Elmwood, WI; Rosemont, MN; Decatur, AL; and finally, for 17 years at River Falls High School. Countless students remember the influence of ML’s “I-Search” paper, Great Works class, Advanced Composition class, and high expectations in (and out of) the classroom. In each location she worked, she developed special relationships with students and colleagues and always loved attending reunions. When her children Trygve and Kjersti were born, she initially stayed at home. Upon returning to work, she continued to prioritize caring for needs at home: clean clothes ready for the next day, warm meals eaten together as a family, game nights around the round kitchen table, regular church attendance and participation, and holiday traditions that incorporated the family’s Scandinavian heritage. An incredible baker and cook, she loved making cheese straws with her son and krumkake with her grandson. Mary Louise was also known for her cheese rolls and cinnamon rolls and would welcome new neighbors with freshly baked bread. She taught her children to set a nice table, hand write thank-you notes and sympathy cards, and to place value on responsibility, integrity, and good citizenship. A patriot, Mary Louise always kept up with (and had opinions about) current events; wrote countless published Letters to the Editor; served 8 years on the St. Croix County Board; and volunteered many hours toward campaigns and the Republican Party. She served as an alternate delegate to the GOP National Convention in 1976; served as 3rd District Secretary; and received the Alvan E. Bovay Award. Always committed to lifelong learning, she and Craig attended 22 Road Scholar educational trips. As a family, and as a couple, Craig and Mary Louise traveled the world extensively and enjoyed camping where “there’s plenty to do and see in Wisconsin.” Until the end of her life, whatever Mary Louise read, she’d highlight salient points and write comments in the margins. She was a lifelong owner of much-loved dogs (and one special cat), a green thumb, a piano player and singer, an international student host, a proud hockey and Marching Wildcat mom, and an avid Packer fan. (Days before she died, Mary Louise enjoyed one last Packer victory and a Vikings loss surrounded by her children, son and daughter in law, and grandchildren; she stated she “loved Love”). As a niece astutely wrote upon Mary Louise’s death on September 27, 2023, “Her fierce opinionated temperament sometimes overshadowed her caring funny side. Aunt Mary was one of a kind.” Mary Louise is preceded in death by her husband Craig W. Olson; parents Harold Sr. and Louise Olson; granddaughter Vilté Louise Olson; brothers Harold Olson and Gayle Olson; nephews Scott Olson and Chris Olson; and niece Julie Seeley. Mary Louise is survived by her children Trygve (Erika Veberyte) Olson and Kjersti (Brian) Duncan; grandchildren Ula Louise Olson, Kaja Olson, Espen Duncan, Marit Louise Duncan; sisters-in-law Karin Brown, Dorothy Olson, and Janice Olson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and students. Her students called her “M.L.”; her other favorite people called her “Mom” and “Bestemor.” The family would like to publicly thank Woodland Hill, Hudson Clinic, and Lakeview Palliative & Hospice Care Staff for the many ways they provided care to Mary Louise and her family during this final year. Family felt very blessed by the opportunity to be with her to share and receive her love at the end of her earthly life. A memorial service for Mary Louise will be Friday, October 6, 2023 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church (420 S 4th St) in River Falls, Wisconsin at 10:00AM. Visitation will also be at church on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls. Dennis Gilbertson, Age 84 Dennis was born on April 12, 1939 in Spring Valley, Wisc., the first of four children born to G. Lester and Vera (Stratton) Gilbertson. He was born with a caring soul that he shared with the world, a deep love of nature, and a steadfast loyalty to family and friends. Dennis attended Spring Valley schools from K through 12. He earned a BS degree from the U of Wisc, River Falls, and a MS from the U of MN. Dennis was a devoted educator, spending the majority of his 36-year teaching career teaching biology, anatomy, and other science classes in the Mounds View School District. He was an inspiration to his students and never gave up on them no matter what. His caring nature reached far beyond the classroom. Strangers quickly became friends, and as one said, “His friendship knew no boundary.” Mistymoon Lake in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming was a cherished spot for Dennis. He and Claudia spent many summers leading church and school groups as they backpacked to Mistymoon and beyond. These ten-day hikes were a perfect platform for Dennis to deliver not only lessons about nature, but also lessons about life. Dennis lived his life advocating for justice. His children remember being brought to protests and rallies at a very early age. He walked the talk by being a good example of loving all people. He was especially happy when, after hundreds of hours of volunteer work in support of same-sex marriage, an attempt to disallow this was soundly defeated in Minnesota. In his last two years, he and Claudia joined Giving Voice – a choir for people living with dementia and their caregivers. He started singing more loudly in church and around the house while helping with chores. During a recent hospital stay, while he was highly medicated, this love for singing literally gave him a voice. He would sing with visitors even when he was too sleepy to talk. He was a marathon runner, a scuba diver, a world traveler, and he loved his church family at Peace Lutheran Church. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Ruth Lynum and Carol Bergum. He is survived by his wife Claudia, daughters Nancy (Chris) Erickson, Laura (Kent) Dirks, son Joel (Michelle Tolub), grandchildren Tyler, Jens, Ellie, Kelsey, and Henry, sister Vivian Mundt, many nieces/nephews, great nieces/nephews, cousins, inlaws, and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 12 noon at Peace Lutheran Church, 1744 Walnut Street, Lauderdale, MN 55113. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am. A meal will follow the service. Memorials preferred to Giving Voice (givingvoicechorus.org) or Peace Lutheran Church (peacelauderdale.com). |

His favorite retreat was the serene Wildwoods Moody’s Resort in Clam Falls, where he found solace in the tranquility of nature and the camaraderie of fellow campers. Here, he enjoyed time spent at the campfires, four wheeling on the trails, or playing Siren or Frederic’s Golf Courses. On the golf course, Bob found both challenge and relaxation. Hunting was another of Bob’s passions, and he pursued it with an unmatched fervor. His most cherished hunting memories were the expeditions and unforgettable elk hunting trips to Wyoming with his brother Richard and nephew Rick. These adventures meant the world to him, while allowing him to connect with nature in profound ways. He also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino to try his luck, snowmobiling, and making sure his yard was mowed to with precision. After retirement, Bob found great joy in spending time at his brother’s automotive shop, known as ‘Dick’s Auto,’ where he eagerly offered his assistance in any way possible. He relished accompanying his brother Dick to various car auctions. Within the community at ‘The Shop,’ he affectionately became known as U-B., an abbreviation for Uncle Bob. The warm camaraderie and special bond he shared with everyone there filled his heart with happiness, and he couldn’t help but wear a constant smile when he gathered with them for lunch.
