Chuck and Mary Cain's son is Ellsworth's new High School Principal

But it wasn't until Cain began teaching that becoming an administrator got his serious consideration. "When I was into my second year of teaching, my assistant principal thought I should go into administration," he said Friday. That meant dual workloads for a time, as the Ellsworth native continued being a teacher while studying for a masters degree in Educational Leadership. Soon after, he was able to capitalize on this second effort, assuming assistant principal duties in several area schools, most recently at his hometown high school. It's there he's now advancing for the first time to principal, succeeding Chuck Buckel.
As a student himself Cain liked most everything about school, he said. Golf and wrestling were sports he enjoyed the most. The son of Chuck (a retired Ford plant supervisor) and Mary (retired from Pierce County's clerk of courts office and as Ellsworth Police Department secretary), he has two brothers, Gary (social worker) and Greg, and a sister, Karen (Thoen), a teacher at Prairie View.
After high school graduation, he attended UW-River Falls, and graduated in 1990 with a degree in secondary education. He interned at Hastings, MN before being hired at Black River Falls. "I wanted to get back to Western Wisconsin," he said of leaving BRF for his alma mater, a high school of comparable size. But the idea of becoming an administrator had alreadv formed. He said he studied at Verono, (MN) State and completed the degree enabling him to be a K-12 principal in 1997.
He was soon hired as assistant principal at Menomonie Senior High School and a year later became assistant principal at the former Meyer Middle School in River Falls. He held that position for the 1998-'99 and '99-'00 school terms. The assistant principal post at Ellsworth was then offered to him, he said.
Because of demands on him as principal, Cain will no longer coach wrestling. Just as his duties are being adjusted, so are those of Mark Stoesz, the new assistant principal. Stoesz will continue as athletic director for the high school, with related work at the middle school spun off, a product of two-and-a-half posts being combined into two.
The new principal and his wife, DarIa, a Prescott native, have a son, Brad, a sixth grader. His spouse is employed in the financial end of an automotive group's business in St. Paul. In his spare time, he enjoys bow hunting, duck hunting, walleye fishing and the outdoors in general. (A more detailed article appears in the Pierce County Herald.)

The following is a Thank You written by Helen Holerud Lorentson, and published in the SV Sun, for the obviously we--deserved tribute given her on her retirement from her service to the Spring Valley Schools as Bus Driver:

"THANK YOU" just doesn't seem enough to say for what I experienced on the last 2 days of my being a School Bus Driver for the Spring Valley Schools. On Thursday evening I was honored at the School Recognition Dinner by the school and my fellow bus drivers. Then, on Friday, I started on my route with a heavy heart knowing it was the last morning I would be driving my bus and picking up my kids for school. After 22 years of driving - 15 years on a regular route, you begin to think they are your kids. The first stop started out with a big bouquet of flowers and it blossomed from there - cards and flowers and presents and well wishes filled the air at every stop.
Then, back at the bus garage, the bus drivers had another present for me; a beautiful "Bear" blanket. Surprising I kept it together until I got home and sat down and started reading all the cards that my kids made for me with special notes that were to touching and special and also notes from many of the parents; it really warmed the heart.
Then it came time for the evening route and it started all over again - when I reached the elementary school I was greeted with flowers again as the kids got on the bus and it didn't stop there. Along the route many parents met their kids at the bus with well wishes for me and even another bouquet of flowers. The kids repeated over and over - I will miss you - now how do you just say "THANK YOU' for all of that?
First of all I want to say a special thank you to all the bus driver - you were a great bunch to start and end the day with - there never was a dull moment and I will really miss our "Educational" talks. Next, I want to say Thank You to my bus kids for being the greatest bunch of kids I could ever ask for - I will never forget a one of you and I will miss you for years to come. Oh, we had our difficulties sometimes, but not very often anything that couldn't be handled right there on the bus. Thank you, parents for always standing behind me and never interfering with the decision to put a kid in the front seat.     "THANK YOU" from the bottom of my heart to each and everyone of you for making my retirement day a day I will NEVER forget.
Always your friend, Bus driver of (#14) & #3, Helen Lorentson
